Sometimes I wonder about ghosts

Sometimes I wonder if supernatural forces are at work, or if the space time continuum has tiny rips that affect everyday life. For instance, I was playing a board game with my friend and I really needed a pair of ones. I said, "C'mon, snake eyes!" to my friend's and my utter shock, two ones came up. I took her piece. If this wasn't amazing enough, my friend said, "What I really need is a two," she rolled and a pair of twos came up! We kept calling out numbers when we rolled and the die kept obeying our commands! Too spooked to play another game, I ran to confide in my blog. So this raises the obvious question, what the hell just happened?!

  1. Assuming that the rolls are completely random (no physical manipulation during the roll conciously or subconciously) the odds for rolling the numbers requested may be low but not astronomically low, and it is very possible for random chance to account for this. And depending upon the needed roll the chances could be quite good for getting the required roll. For example there is a 1 in 36 chance of rolling snake eyes or any other double for that matter when rolling 2d6. However, there is a 1 in 6 chance of rolling a 7. If you are just needing a number off one of the dice and it not mattering which one then the odds are more in your favor at about 11 in 36 or almost 1 in 3. If you are playing a game that requires individual numbers obtained from even more dice the odds become even more favorable.

In any case it is an odd occurence when you play a game involving dice that every roll goes your way, but it does occasional happen, and random chance dictates that it should. Now if this is a sustainable effect, ie you can repeat this at will or are able to recreate the circumstances and then have the same results repeat, then you may be on to something. However, given the number of games you have played involving dice do you really think that it is unlikely that in at least one of them you had a streak?

  2. Thanks for posting! (Congrats on being the first one on the whole blog!) In answer to your comment yes, I know it's probably just a luck streak. However it does spark my imagination. I mean, for the whole game we gave commands to the die and they followed it. I still go for a rip in the space time continuum theory!

  3. I suspect you have caused something catastrophically bad to happen to some poor, unsuspecting Dungeons & Dragons group somewhere. It is also possible you have magically enhanced dice. Keep 'em, and check later.
